Chinese 2048

Slide numbered tiles across a 4-by-4 grid, merging equal values on the way to 2048 and beyond.

Choose one of four directions, combine matching numbers, and preserve room for the next randomly placed tile.

Chinese 2048 uses a 4-by-4 board filled with numbered tiles. Pressing an arrow key shifts every movable tile as far as it can travel in that direction. Movement stops at the grid boundary or when another tile blocks the path. After each turn, an empty square receives a new tile bearing either 2 or 4, changing the arrangement that the next move must handle.

When equal numbers collide during a shift, they combine into one tile worth their total. A newly formed tile cannot merge for a second time during that same move. If three equal tiles line up, the pair farthest along the selected direction merges. Four matching values filling a row or column split into two pairs when shifted along their line.

About Chinese 2048

The named objective is to create a 2048 tile. Reaching it does not force the session to stop; the grid remains available for attempts at larger values, up to the stated maximum tile of 131,072. Larger tiles have a soft glow that distinguishes them from lower values.

A counter begins at zero in the upper-right corner. Every merge adds the value of the newly created tile to that total, linking each combination to the running score. The board ends when it has no empty spaces and no adjacent matching values, because no legal shift remains. The puzzle therefore connects direction choice, available space, pair formation, and the arrival of each new 2 or 4 tile.

Objective: Create a tile valued at 2048 by merging equal numbered tiles on the grid.

Core loop

  • Press an arrow key to slide the grid, merge equal values that collide, receive a new 2 or 4 tile, and choose the next direction.

How to play Chinese 2048

  1. Use an arrow key to move all available tiles toward one edge of the grid.
  2. Bring two tiles with the same number together so they merge into their combined value.
  3. Continue choosing directions as new 2 or 4 tiles appear in empty spaces.

Gameplay mechanics

  • Four-direction movement on a 4-by-4 grid
  • Random insertion of a 2 or 4 after each turn
  • Equal-value collision and merging
  • One merge per resulting tile during a move
  • Special pairing order for three or four equal tiles
  • Continued play after reaching 2048

Progression and modes

The target begins at 2048, after which play can continue toward higher values up to 131,072.

  • Each merge increases the running score by the value of the tile it creates.

What to expect

  • A number-merging grid puzzle where every direction changes the whole board and introduces another low-value tile.
