Simon Says Game

Watch the pads light up, then repeat the pattern. Each round adds one more step — how long a sequence can you remember?

Loading Color Memory…
This simon says game is a free color and sound memory game that runs in your browser. Colored pads light up with a tone, you repeat the sequence in order, and each round adds one more pad to the pattern. There is nothing to download and no account to create. You can play with a mouse, touch, or the keyboard. You can set the game to end on the first mistake or to allow one retry per round. Your score is the longest pattern you complete, and your best scores stay on this device. It plays fully with the sound turned off, because every pad also lights up.

How to play the simon says game online

  1. Choose a Speed (Normal, Fast or Speeds up) and a Mode (Classic or Reverse) in the toolbar. Changing either one discards the game in progress and sets up a fresh game.
  2. Press Options to set Pads (4 or 6), Win target, Strict, Sound and Show numbers on the pads. Pads, Win target and Strict start a fresh game, so set them before you play.
  3. Press Start to begin the game. Press New game if you want a new random pattern and the game to start at once.
  4. Watch the pattern. The pads light one after another, each with its own tone.
  5. When the pads go quiet, press them in the order shown. In Reverse mode, press them backwards.
  6. After the last correct pad, the status line says “Correct! Round N done.” The next round starts after a short pause.
  7. If you press a wrong pad with Strict on, the “Game over” dialog shows your score. Press Play again to start over.

Keyboard keys are Q, W, A and S for the four main pads (green, red, yellow and blue), and 1 to 4 for the pads in order. Space or Enter starts the game, N starts a new game, and F turns on fullscreen.

What are the simon says game rules?

Each round, the game adds one random pad to the end of the pattern and plays the whole pattern from the start. You repeat it by pressing the pads in the same order, and the round is complete when you press the last pad correctly.

Round 1 has one pad, round 2 has two, and so on. The pattern stays the same within a game, so each new round only adds one pad to what you already know. Pads can repeat, even several times in a row. Presses are ignored while the pattern plays, and there is no timer, so you can think as long as you like on your turn.

For example, at round 4 the pattern is yellow, green, yellow, red. You must press yellow, green, yellow, red. If round 5 adds yellow to the end and you press the wrong first pad, the game ends with a score of 4, because you last completed a 4-step pattern.

What is the difference between Classic and Reverse mode?

In Classic mode, you repeat the pattern in the order it was shown. In Reverse mode, you repeat it backwards, so the last pad shown is the first one you press. For the round 4 pattern yellow, green, yellow, red, the correct answer in Reverse is red, yellow, green, yellow. The status line tells you which mode you are in.

What happens when you make a mistake in the simon says game?

With Strict on, which is the default, one wrong pad ends the game at once. The wrong pad lights, you hear a low buzz if sound is on, and the game over dialog shows the length of the last pattern you fully repeated.

With Strict off, the first mistake in a round plays the same pattern once more, and you answer again from the first pad. This is your one retry for that round. A second mistake in the same round ends the game. The retry comes back at the start of each new round, and it does not reduce your score.

How is the score counted in the simon says game?

Your score is the longest pattern you completed in that game. If you miss the very first step, your score is 0. A win counts as a score equal to the win target. Your best score is stored for each combination of Pads, Mode, Strict and Speed, so changing any of those starts a separate best. Win target, sound and number settings do not change which best is used.

How does speed change the simon says game?

Speed controls how long each pad stays lit and how long the pause is before the next pad during playback. Your presses are not affected by the speed setting.

SpeedPattern lengthLit / pause (ms)
Normalany480 / 200
Fastany280 / 110
Speeds up1-4480 / 200
Speeds up5-8380 / 160

What are good simon says game strategy and tips?

Say the pattern to yourself while it plays. Each round only adds one new pad, so you only need to remember the pad at the end. The tone of each pad also helps, so keep Sound on if you can hear it.

Use Reverse mode only after Classic feels easy, since you need to recall the sequence backwards. Turn Strict off while you learn, because one retry per round gives you a second try. Set Win target to 8 steps to practise a clear finish before playing Endless. If you find colors hard to tell apart, turn on Show numbers on the pads.

Because there is no timer, take your time on each turn, and check each pad before you press it.

Frequently asked questions

Is this simon says game free, and do I need to sign up?

Yes, it is free to play. You do not need to sign up or create an account, and the game runs in your browser.

Can I play the simon says game on a phone?

Yes. The pads respond to touch, and the layout fits a 320-pixel wide phone without sideways scrolling. On a 375-pixel phone, the pads are visible without scrolling.

Is my game saved?

Your settings, best scores and the game in progress are saved in your browser on this device. Nothing is sent anywhere. If you reload during a game, the game is restored but paused, and you press Start to watch the current round’s pattern again. A finished game is not restored.

Do I need sound to play the sound memory game?

No. When Sound is off, the game is fully playable because each pad also lights up bright when it plays.

Is there a timer?

No. There is no time limit, so you can take as long as you like to repeat the pattern.

Can I use the keyboard instead of the mouse?

Yes. Use Q, W, A and S for the four main pads, or keys 1 to 4 for the pads in order. Space or Enter starts the game, and N starts a new game.

Can I make the game easier?

Yes. Turn off Strict to get one retry per round, and keep Mode on Classic. You can also choose Normal speed rather than Speeds up, and turn on Show numbers on the pads.
